Carers Connected April 2017

Welcome to the April edition of our newsletter 'Carers Connected'.

This newsletter is released monthly giving you our latest news and letting you know what is happening in the weeks ahead to support you in your caring role.

Latest news

Return, Recycle, Reuse

Are you or any of your family still in possession of a piece of medical equipment that you or they no longer require?

If so, Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) would like to make a request - please can you send it back so it can be used to help someone else?

In 2016 local health services issued over 100,000 items of NHS equipment including crutches, walking frames and mattresses to patients in Suffolk at a cost of more than £8.5m, but by the end of the year more than a third of them had not been returned.

The equipment the CCG is keen to recover ranges from alternating air mattresses, which cost £1,650 each, to wheeled adjustable frames, which cost £12.70 each. In one month alone last year nearly £8,500 worth of wheeled adjustable frames and nearly £600,000 worth of air mattresses were issued by Suffolk NHS services.

Where do I go?

You can return equipment to one of three collection points set up at Medequip depots across the county. The depots are located at:

Unit 3 Bunting Road, Bury St Edmunds, IP32 7BX

Unit 1a, The Moor Business Park, Benacre Road, Ellough, nr Beccles, NR34 7TQ

Unit 31, Bluestem Road, Ransomes Europark, Ipswich, IP3 9RR

What if I can’t get to one of the collection points?

If you are unable to drop equipment off at one of the collection points you can call Medequip on 01473 351805 or email Suffolk@medequip-uk.com  to arrange for them to come and collect it from you.

An update...

As we head toward April our thoughts turn to the new financial year and the services that we have been funded to deliver from April 2017.

Support for mental health family carers

Following the recent review by the Commissioner, which many of you contributed towards, we are pleased to say that we were part of the winning partnership bid.  This new service, from April 2017 will bring together the information, advice and guidance services for users of Mental Health services (currently provided by Suffolk Libraries) and the services for family carers (currently provided by ourselves) into a new, single service across Suffolk. The new service will aim to improve access to information, advice and guidance to support positive mental well-being for people living with mental health needs and their families and carers.  There will be more opportunities for people to become involved in shaping the way this service is developed and delivered across the county and to support this aim Suffolk MIND will contribute towards this new partnership by developing a volunteer peer support service.

If you are a family carer currently in receipt of a service from us, we will write to you shortly to tell you about this and the changes it may bring, in more detail.

Substance Misuse family carers/ affected others

Towards the end of 2016 we, as sub-contractors within the Suffolk Recovery Network, were advised about an overall review of the services delivered across the network and a reduction in funding received through Public Health.

The contracting organisation, Turning Point, led this process and review, both in terms of restructuring their own internal services and by deciding upon which services they wanted us to continue to deliver from April 2017.  Turning Point have confirmed that they want us to continue to provide the 'Navigating The Road To Recovery' programme but in a scaled back format due to reduced funding.

Dementia family carers

From 1st April 2017, Dementia services  in Suffolk will be provided by Sue Ryder and a partnership of organisations, with the emphasis on communities.

This means that from April 2017 our Caring For Dementia With Confidence programme will no longer be funded.  Family carers and families of people with dementia can, however, still access our generic Caring With Confidence programme.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank our staff and volunteers for their continued support over what has been an unsettled few months.  Our volunteers are key to us being able to deliver our services and we are grateful to all of you - thank you.

We are aware that there is a lot of information here so please do contact us to find out what we can offer you or if you are concerned about any of the information.

NEW 'Wellbeing for men' programme

We are going to be running a new 'Wellbeing for Men' programme starting on 12th June in Claydon. We will focus on how you can look at after your own wellbeing as a man and the steps you can take to look after yourself. The programme will be consist of four sessions with a special event in the last session.

If you are interested in attending the programme, please call Diane Goodchild on 01473 835438.

Our bus is out and about

Come and see us if you would like information, advice and guidance in your caring role.
