This newsletter is released monthly giving you our latest news and letting you know what is happening in the weeks ahead to support you in your caring role.

Singing to support family carers

The Love to Sing Community Choir has choirs in Woodbridge, Leiston & Snape aiming to bring people together who love to sing.

Love to Sing & the Suffolk Constabulary Male Voice Choir are holding a gala concert to raise money for us alongside Suffolk Mind.

The concert will take place on 14th October at their venue in Woodbridge between 7.30-9.30pm.

Courses to help you in your caring role

 

Mental health First Aid to support young people

Do you live with, work with, teach or support young people aged 8-18?

We are now able to deliver the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) youth programme, an internationally recognised, two day training course that can provide information, tools and techniques to promote a young person’s mental and emotional wellbeing and enable you to support a young person who may be experiencing mental and emotional distress.

Caring with Confidence sessions

Would you like to gain information & tools to help in your caring role?

Caring with Confidence is a completely FREE selection of information sessions & programmes designed to provide you with information, tools & resources to make your caring role easier.

 

Family carers who have taken part in the course have said how much it has helped them

Caring with Confidence programmes will be visiting Ipswich, Woodbridge, Sudbury & Bury St Edmunds in October, November & December.

We are also launching a brand new information programme called ‘Feeling Stronger to Connect’ beginning in Eye on 10th October. This is a 4 week information programme which is fun & interactive & designed not only to give you information to help you in your caring role, but also to help you connect with your local community. ‘Feeling Stronger to Connect’ will also be visiting Brandon & Bungay in the new year.

Do you care for someone who is blind or partially sighted?

We have an exciting new offer for anyone caring for someone who is blind or partially sighted. We are teaming up with My Guide from the Guide Dog Association to offer an interactive information session. The session will cover topics like guiding safely & ways to better understand a sight condition.

We will also provide information on how we can support you in your caring role. The session will be held in Bury St Edmunds on 12th October which is World Sight Day 2017.

Caring for adults with Autism

Do you care for an adult diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Condition?

As a family carer of someone diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, we are here to support you.

On our Caring for adults with Autism programme you will have the opportunity to meet other family carers in similar circumstances, discuss some of the issues that you may be dealing with, explore your style of caring & gain ideas for your own wellbeing.

 

Family carers who have taken part in the course have said how much it has helped them

'I have more knowledge of Autism now, I have certainly learnt a lot at this course. It was nice to speak to other carers who are going through the same things on a daily basis.'

 

The programme is open to any family carer who cares for an adult over 18 who has an Autistic Spectrum condition.

Information, advice, guidance and emotional support

Our IAGES team is here to support you

Our IAGES is FREE and confidential for family carers, families & friends with mental & emotional wellbeing needs. We aim to help you maintain your caring role & look after your own wellbeing by providing information, advice, guidance & emotional support.

 

One-to-one with an IAGES worker

If you would like some emotional support, the team offer one-to-one support with an IAGES worker. This may be via the telephone or face to face

 

Open Space sessions for mental health family carers

We are running ‘Open Space’ courses for family carers. They will consist of four sessions focusing on the issues and needs of family carers caring for someone with a mental health/emotional wellbeing need. They will provide an opportunity to receive information, share ideas and experiences and meet other family carers who may be in a similar caring role.

The session plan is as follows

Session 1 - Introduction and carers rights and services

Session 2 - Mental health awareness and positive change

Session 3 - Coping strategies, communication and boundaries

Session 4 - Emotional needs and resources

Please note: the order of these sessions may change from the above depending on the availability of external speakers.

Sessions continue in Ipswich at Quay Place on 4th & 18th October 2017 10am - 12pm.

Sessions continue in Haverhill at the Arts Centre on 5th, 26th October & 9th November

10.30am - 12.30pm.

Peer-led information sessions

Developed from our programme & other group activities, these sessions provide an opportunity to receive & share infromation & peer support. Currently there are groups held once a month in

Stowmarket - last Wednesday of each month 2-4pm

Bury St Edmunds - last Tuesday of the month 6-8pm

These sessions will extend across Suffolk.

Navigating the Road to Recovery

Do you care for someone who is affected by substance misuse?

Working in partnership with Turning Point, we run Navigating the Road to Recovery, a five session course specifically designed to give information & support to you if you care for someone who is affected by substance misuse, including alcohol.

 

We are running a NEW course at Lackford Lakes in Bury St Edmunds beginning on 27th November 2017.

 

We also run family drop-in sessions as part of our this programme. These take place at Turning Point in Ipswich, Lowestoft & Bury St Edmunds.

Moving & Handling training

Our Occupational Therapist can visit you at home to give you practical information and advice about how to move and handle the person you care for without injuring yourself.

 

‘The Occupational Therapist who visited me was very informative & professional - I am putting the advice in to practice.’
