Young carers

If you are 9-15 years old and care for, or are affected by, a family member who has a physical or mental illness or who has a problem with the misuse of drugs or alcohol, you are a young carer.

About us

We are a team of professionals who want to help you if you care for a family member, if you are struggling to cope or if you just need some information to help you along the way.

What we offer

We have a dedicated team of advisers available to help you when you are struggling in your caring role. We want to help prevent you from missing out on what your friends are up to because you are caring.

The support we can give you depends on your individual needs and we would do an assessment with you to see what your needs are.

Depending on your needs, we can offer you time with an adviser to help you learn new ways of coping and information to help you understand the illness of the person you care for. We also offer advocacy if it is needed.

We can arrange for you to come along to our groups and activities to have time out and meet other young carers so you can support each-other. To find out more, ask your support worker.

We also work with lots of schools and colleges to help them understand what it is like for you.

We believe that you are entitled to the same rights and opportunities as any young person to relax, have fun and get help and support when you need it. We understand that you might not want to talk about your situation but here are some tips from other young carers which might help you...

Don't bottle your feelings up, tell somebody how you feel

If you are struggling with your caring role, talk to an adult you trust

Don't be afraid to ask for help

The young carers we work with say 'The advisers are very friendly and give you useful advice and information that will make you feel more happy and confident when speaking to others. Plus its a great way to make new friends who are in the same situations as yourself. Its a great way to have a break from home'.

It is important for you to know that you are not alone, there are lots of young carers and support is always available.

Have your say

No one knows more about your situation than you which is why we listen to what you tell us. Our groups of young carers meet regularly to discuss ideas and opinions. We believe you are the best people to tell us about

The support we offer and the ways we can improve it

How well other services, including schools, support you and other young carers

Listen to their wishes and feelings

Look at opportunities in the young carers school or local community for them to access activities away from their caring role

Help the young carer identify trusted adults they can talk to

With the young carers permission, talk to their parents/guardians about their role and the support they may need as a family
